Q. What happens in a session?
I am interested in getting an overview of what is happening for an individual or couple in the initial sessions, clarifying where they get stuck, and looking at the way forward.
When working with couples, I work alongside the couple to help them establish a secure connection and help them overcome the negative ways of interacting with each other. To start off, I like to observe and understand each persons perspective of how they see their relationship.. I also look at the meaning each person gives to their moments of interaction. I then help the couple start to understand what it may be that is preventing them from developing the closer connection that they desire. But, I am also aware that not all couples come to counselling with a clear common goal; one partner may be feeling ambivalent while the other partner may be confused about their partners’ perceived lack of input. It is part of the work to understand what reasons could be behind this in order to help make a way forward. My couples work is guided by the EFT approach (Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy).
Q. What if I don't gel with the counsellor?
It is important that you feel that it is workable for you if you are coming to see me. I will not be offended if it isn’t what you need, and will be willing to help refer you to other counsellors.
Q. Do we have to delve into childhood issues?
Most all of the work with couples is working with the here and now. It will no doubt be a helpful context to understand how the past may have shaped us in the present.
Q. What is the cost of a session?
This varies depending on client needs. I am open to discussing this for an individual and also for a couples, please email me or call me and I can give you a price once I have a better understanding of your needs.
