Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) is a way of working with couples based on attachment theory. It aims to enable and facilitate the restructuring of attachment bonds that have become strained.
EFT is a well researched, and well supported way of working with couples. It has originated from extensive research conducted while working with couples. Sue Johnson is the name behind this way of couples work. EFT had its beginings in the 1980s, and has since shown to have a 70% recovery rate from marital distress, and a 90% rate of significant improvement (Johnson, 2004) for couples in therapy.
Couples can find themselves becoming stuck in ways of relating that can be both frustrating and eventually despairing over a long period of time. That stuck way of relating creates a dynamic that is hard to shift out of. This dynamic is referred to as 'The Negative Cycle' in EFT terms. EFT has a strategic process driven approach to redeveloping a couples ability to relate with one another in more rewarding ways without the strong influence of the negative dynamic creating distance in the relationship. The initial work is to help a couple work together to understand and manage the negative cycle rather than it managing them. From there couples are able to develop and restructure their bond.
